Driven by Design,
Fueled by Human Data

Currently at Audible, Rick designs the conversational and agentic layer of AI-native search and discovery experiences for millions of Audible / Amazon customers across the world.

He works close to the system: running his own research, reading the raw queries rather than the tidy summaries, and designing against how a model actually behaves instead of how it demos.

Having lived in four countries and ten cities, he's seen how differently people ask for what they want — which is most of the problem in search.

He writes about design on Medium and mentors on ADP List.

My Design Ethos
01.
Empathy is a method, not a mood

Research is how you earn the right to make decisions for people who aren't in the room. Anyone can say they care about users; the work is showing your evidence when someone senior disagrees.
02.
In AI products, behavior is the interface
You can't spec a probabilistic system in a static frame. The real design work is the failure path — the wait, the wrong answer, the bad route — and how honestly the interface represents what the system actually knows.
03.
Trust ships before pixels do

The best design that never gets built is worth nothing. Naming a constraint early, staying honest about tradeoffs, and inviting critique before you're finished are what get things shipped in a large organization.
04.
Launch is where the design starts

Shipping is a hypothesis. What behavior data tells you at week six almost always contradicts what the deck said at week one — the discipline is changing your mind in public.
